10/04/2017 – Harrisburg Invitational

Temperatures started to rise again, but the Foxes were hoping it wouldn’t effect them negatively. As the races were about to start, the temperature started dropping and the Foxes were happy. The Foxes took 26 runners to the Harrisburg Invitational to compete against multiple single A teams and also AA teams. The course was the same course that the Foxes ran just a few weeks ago, but we were hoping for faster times. The order of events were 4:30 Boys Varsity, 5:00 Girls Varsity and 5:30 p.m. Open race.

The Boys varsity team has been doing really well over this year and were looking forward to showing the competition that they would be able to pull a win at the invitational. The Boys race had about 90 runners in it. The race starts out going straight up a long hill, then comes down the hill, then back up the hill for the first mile. Theron Smith took off fast and looked to battle for one of the top spots on the day. Theron has came off of two really good performances at Freeburg and Carterville and has been running well in practice. Hot on Theron’s heels were Hunter Braden and Matt Rubenacker. Hunter and Matt continued to work on the competition and moved up to finish in the 1st and 2nd spots overall in the A race for schools with a full team. The only person on the A division that finished in front of them was Ty Barbre from Carmi. Slightly behind Hunter and Matt was Theron Smith, Logan Hunt and Kaden Richards, all of which received medals on the day. Logan Hunt keeps improving all the time and might move up into the top spots of the Foxes team again (like last year) towards the end of the season. Kaden Richards has improved non stop throughout the season and has show that he has an immense amount of running talent, we really hope Kaden will run with us and help lead the team over the next few years. The top 20 in each division received medals. Adam Wellen and Clay Ragan finished quickly after. The Foxes took the win and are hoping to take a few more wins in a row over the next week. The Foxes were without Trenton Butler who is nursing an injury in his foot right now.

The Girls varsity was up next and had seven runners that would be competing. Kylee Vaughan was not able to run for the Foxes because she was busy winning a Regional title and helping win the Regional Championship for the girls golf team, Congratulations Kylee. The Foxes were looking to have fixed some small issues they were having and looking forward to competing against some tough teams. Jasmine Coomes took off fast and worked up on the front runners of the race. Jasmine finished up in fourth place and for the first time she was able to beat Francesca from Harrisburg. Raegan Halley who has been feeling rough over the past few races, improved upon it and finished just a few places behind Jasmine Coomes (8th Place). Almost right behind Raegan was the Dynamic Duo of Kaylee Chapman and Olivia Ragan who both went under 23:00 for the race. Abby Reyling was the Foxes fifth runner and finished only a few places behind Carmi’s number five runner. Leah Ragan finished just slightly after Abby. Jevin Shreve had a foot that was hurting her and at the 3/4 mile mark we decided to “live to fight another day” and dropped the race to save from further injury.  The girls had a good showing placing second behind the tough DuQuoin team.

The final race of the day was the Open Race, an Open Race is open to anyone who want to run it, but sometimes the coordinators of the race limit it to only high school runners. In the open Keegan Johnson took the number one spot for the Foxes with a blazing time of 18:11 which would have been the 6th spot for the Varsity Foxes on the day today. Right behind Keegan was Colin Meade with a time of 18:31. These two runners have been running really well and hopefully will continue to improve as the season comes to an end. In order of finish were the following; Trace Butler, Raegan Irwin, Ian Stover, Austin Stanley, Dylan Halley, Will Jones, Clancy Bond and Seth Davenport. Many of the varsity runners ran parts of the open to help push the Foxes runners and the times show that it really helped. Most of the open runners ran quite a bit quicker today than they ran a few short weeks ago. Maddi Jo Maxwell was the only girl in the open run. Maddi Jo ran well and was encourage by Jasmine Coomes to run a 27:50 which would have put her as the sixth runner on the girls team today. The young Foxes runners really proved how much they have improved over the past months and are working on moving towards being varsity runners

The Foxes next race will be at Home at Dolan Lake on October the 10th. If you have never been to a cross country race, I would like to invite you out to the lake for a race consisting of 17 teams to cheer on your Foxes runners. The F/S race is at 4:00, Girls Varsity at 4:30 and Varsity Boys at 5:00.
