10/26/2019 – Regional (West Frankfort)

Regional (West Frankfort Park)The Foxes second trip to West Frankfort this year was for the regional. The Foxes new it would be a tough race and they would have to pull out some amazing racing to have any chance at beating Benton. The day of the Regional was not exactly what you would call a nice day for racing a Cross Country race. The weather was extremely rainy and it rained from the time we left for the meet until many hours after the meet was over.  The Foxes and Lady Foxes have had great seasons and are looking to extend into the post season as much as possible. The Lady Foxes were slated to start racing 10:00 a.m. and the boys race was to start at 11:00 a.m.

The Foxes girls came into the regional expecting to be one of the top teams in the race! Last year the Lady Foxes won the regional, but this year Benton was sure to make that not repeat this year. Even with the horrid weather the Lady Foxes were up beat and took off strong as team. Maddie Karcher took off hard and settled in to a good pace and position as she came through the mile mark. Maddie continued to work up and at the end of the race she finished third behind extremely strong runners Mia McLain and Ainsley Bailey of Massac County. After Maddie finished, it wasn’t long until Ashlee Wellen came through taking the 8th individual spot in the meet. Slightly behind Ashlee was Caroline Lueke (15th Overall). Olivia Ragan was 22nd, Kylee Vaughan was 23rd, Dacey Webb was 27th and Jordan Tinsley was 36th overall. The Lady Foxes finished in second place with a score of 56 points. The Benton Rangers ended up beating the Lady Foxes by 33 points. Every single one of the girls ran great despite the conditions and they continue to improve every race. I’m looking forward to see how they do at the Sectionals next weekend. The Foxes advanced to the Sectionals next weekend at the Benton Park.

The boys came into the race knowing they would have to perform well to see how they are doing compared to a month and a half ago when we came to West Frankfort. The boys took off fast and stayed in contention with the leaders of the race from the beginning. At the one mile mark the Foxes had made up a lot of ground and were continually moving up. Theron Smith and Adam Wellen slowly pulled away from the rest of the Foxes with Theron Finishing in the 8th spot overall and Adam finishing in the 9th spot overall. Braydon Middendorf finished only 12 seconds behind them in the 10th spot overall. Trace Butler finished in the 14th spot overall and shortly behind him was Brady Thrane in 20th place. The top five of the Foxes was only separated by 52 seconds. Evan Shelton took the 32nd place overall and Will Jones took the 72nd place as the Foxes 7th man. The Foxes finished second overall as a team with a score of 51 points, which was 30 points behind a strong Benton team. The Foxes will need to compact the time between number one and five even more to have a shot of getting out of the Sectionals next weekend and making their first State bid since 2003. Benton (Regional Champs), Father McGivney (Regional Champs), Freeburg, Christ Our Rock Lutheran, Steeleville, Breese Mater Dei, DuQuoin and Roxana will all be looking to foil that plan. The Foxes have so much talent and we will need to all be at our best next weekend for Sectionals.

The Foxes next race is Sectionals at Benton on November 2nd, the Girls race is at 10:00 a.m.  and the Boys race is at 11:00, with awards at 11:30.
