The Foxes’ Cross Country teams headed to their first cross country meet of the season on August 30th, 2014. The Foxes missed a few good days of practice thanks to administration issues and miss construed illness. Even facing these problems, the teams did well. The Meet was the Metro East Lutheran High School Invitational and it housed over 280 female runners and over 360 male runners. The meet started off with a speech by running legend Craig Virgin. Mr. Virgin was a 2-time World Cross Country Champion and went to the Olympics multiple times. After a rousing speech by Mr. Virgin, the Lady Foxes took to the tough course. The Three Lady Foxes competing at Edwardsville were Leslie Drone, Jasmine Coomes and Schuyler Bailey. Leslie Drone led the team with a 10th place finish in a time of 21:19.9. Jasmine Coomes ran her first race of her cross country career with a nice showing of 100th place and a time of 25:37.5. The Lady Foxes didn’t run enough runners for a team score but started the year off with a couple good performances.

Five minutes after the Lady Foxes finished, the Boy’s Foxes Cross Country team took to the course. The boys lost a few key runners to football this year, but they also picked up a few much needed freshmen who should help out the team immensely. The boy’s team was lead on this day by Junior Chad Barnard who finished in 101st place with a time of 20:24.6. Junior Tyler Byars finished second on the team finishing 126th with a time of 20:44. In third and fourth place on the team was two freshmen Matt Rubenacker (21:28 – 144th) and Trenton Butler (21:32 – 147th). Rounding out the top five was Stephen Strumpher with a time of 21:49. Freshmen Clayton Cross ran his first meet of the season and Senior Garrett Craddock also competed in the meet.

Both teams did really well for a huge meet this early in the season. The Boy’s team are really close together in the top five spots and will be a major contender in the conference and regionals this year. Southern Illinois was represented well with Corbin Kakac of Fairfield winning the race and Harrison Thomas of Carterville taking the second place overall.
