10/05/2016 – Harrisburg Invite

Harrisburg Invitational (Southeastern Illinois College) – 10/05/2016

10/05/2016 – Harrisburg Invitational

Temperatures started to rise again, but the Foxes were hoping it wouldn’t effect them negatively. The Foxes took 22 runners to the Harrisburg Invitational to compete against multiple single A teams and also AA teams. The course was slightly changed from last year, but all changes seemed to be positive. The order of events were 4:30 Boys Varsity, 5:00 Girls Varsity and 5:30 p.m. Open race.

The Boys varsity team has been doing really well over this year and were looking forward to showing the competition that winning the Carterville Invitational was not a fluke. The Boys race had about 70 runners in it. The race starts out going straight up a long hill, then comes down the hill, then back up the hill for the first mile. As the Foxes came toward the 1 Mile mark, Hunter Braden and Matt Rubenacker were neck to neck in 5th and 6th places. Hunter and Matt continued to work on the competition and compete against each other with Matt eventually taking the lead and coming into the home stretch with a time of 17:29 for a 2nd place finish on the class A teams. Hunter Braden finished right behind Matt with a 3rd place. Typical 3rd place finisher for the Foxes Logan Hunt had a couple bad side stitches dropping him back from his usual place on the team but Logan continued to push on and finished just behind Clay Ragan (4th) and Alex Soltanipanah (7th) for a 9th place finish. Trenton Butler and Evan Shelton both finished in under 20:00 minutes for the 6th and 7th places on the team. The Foxes ended up in 1st place with a 72 point lead over the next team.

The Girls varsity was up next and for the first time in a long time, the Foxes had their top five runners healthy and ready to run a fast race. Raegan Halley knew that between the Double A teams and single A teams she would have a ton of competition. Raegan started out a little tense but ended up loosing up and finished as the 6th place girl in the Class A race. Raegan ran a 21:52. Jasmine Coomes and Olivia Ragan once again pushed each other to some very good times, Jasmine finished in 12th and Olivia was 14th. Kaylee Chapman while unable to breath well still bettered her time from last year by a couple of minutes. Rounding out the girls top five was Jade Lemmons who set a PR, which was hard to do on such a hilly course. Jayda Johnson was unable to finish the race. Abby Reyling finished the race with a surge of speed fighting off the nearest girl with her speed down the hill. The girls had a good showing placing third behind the tough teams of DuQuoin and Carmi.

The final race of the day was the Open Race, an Open Race is open to anyone who want to run it, but sometimes the coordinators of the race limit it to only high school runners. In the open Raegan Irwin took the number one spot for the Foxes with a time of 20:01, which was just one second off of the Varsity Foxes’ Evan Shelton’s time.  In order of finish were the following; Colin Meade, Clayton Cross, Dylan Halley, Clancy Bond and Will “the thorn” Jones. The young Foxes runners really proved how much they have improved over the past months and are working on moving towards being varsity runners. Dylan Halley really turned it on with a great time.

The Foxes next race will be at Home at Dolan Lake on October the 11th. If you have never been to a cross country race, I would like to invite you out to the lake for a race consisting of 15 teams to cheer on your Foxes runners. The F/S race is at 4:00, Girls Varsity at 5:00 and Varsity Boys at 5:30.
