West Frankfort Invitational (West Frankfort Park) – 9/7/2017

NARRATIVE – 9/7/2017

Foxes Cross Country teams competed at the West Frankfort Park today in the West Frankfort Invitational. The Foxes ended up with a 2nd place finish by the boys and a 4th place finish by the girls.

The Foxes traveled to the West Frankfort Course for the first time this year. The course for this year was the same modified course as what it was last couple years at West Frankfort.

The girls were up first, this year we knew the girls would have a lot of tough competition with Herrin, Nashville, DuQuoin, Carmi and many more teams being in full force. The girls ran really well and had many PR performances by the girls. Raegan Halley took 1st for the team and 11th overall 20:26, Jasmine was next up with a 13th place finish, both received t-shirts for finishing in the top 20. The Lady Foxes also had 24th Place finish by Olivia Ragan, 33 place finish by Kaylee Chapman and 50th Place by Kylee Vaughan giving the Lady Foxes a respectable 131 points for a fourth place finish on the day behind Nashville (1st), DuQuoin (2nd) and Herrin (3rd). Leah Ragan finished in 86th and Maddi Jo Maxwell finished in 88th. Junior Jevin Shreve ran the Open Race in her debut race of the year and finished in 27:36 for 3rd place for the girls. The Lady Foxes are really looking good and hoping to continue improving to make a good run at the Conference and Regional races.

The boys were up next starting at 5:00 p.m.. The boys were coming into the WF Invite looking to test their strength as a team against Nashville, Herrin and other strong teams and unlike last year, they got their chance this year. The boys started off at a good pace and moved up for the whole race. The boys finished fast and strong with Matt Rubenacker taking 4th place overall and 1st on the Foxes with a time of 16:34. Matt was followed closely by Hunter Braden who finished 5th overall, Trenton Butler was 12th, Logan Hunt 15th, Kaden Richards 17th, Adam Wellen 18th and Theron Smith in 19th. The Foxes finished 2nd overall with a team score of 53 just 2 points behind the Nashville boys team. Between the first and last Fox on the team there was only a 40 second spread. The boys ran exceptionally well especially coming off of the Benton race on Tuesday and a hill workout yesterday.

The Foxes also had 11 athletes compete in the Open race. The Foxes boys finished well in the open, taking 2nd Evan Shelton, 3rd Colin Meade, 4th Trace Butler, 5th Keegan Johnson, 6th Clancy Bond, 7th Raegan Irwin and 10th Will Jones, behind Michael Oliver. The Foxes also had Dylan Halley 13th, Austin Stanley 19th, Ian Stover 25th and Seth Davenport 31st. The Foxes have a very deep team and all of the athletes are improving by leaps and bounds. The future of the Foxes Cross Country teams look bright for the next few years!

The Foxes will continue their quest for the perfect team score on Thursday at the Norris City Invitational. For full details on the Norris City race click here.
