9/12/2019 – West Frankfort Invite

Foxes Cross Country teams competed at the West Frankfort Park today in the West Frankfort Invitational. The Foxes ended up with a 2nd place finish by the boys and a 3rd place finish by the girls.

The Foxes traveled to the West Frankfort Course for the first time this year. The course for this year was the same modified course as what it was last couple years at West Frankfort. The course will also be the regional course this year.

The girls were up first, this year we knew the girls would have a lot of tough competition with Anna-Jonesboro, Herrin, Nashville, DuQuoin, Carmi and many more teams being in full force. The girls ran really well and had many PR performances by the girls. Maddie Karcher took 1st for the team and 2nd overall 19:39, Ashlee Wellen was next up with a speedy time of 20:51 for the 4th place overall. Both Maddie and Ashlee received t-shirts for finishing in the top 20. The Lady Foxes also had 21st Place finish by Caroline Lueke, Olivia Ragan 33rd place, Kylee Vaughan 37th place, Dacey Webb 49th and Jordan Tinsley 70th place. The Lady Foxes had a respectable 97 points for a third place finish on the day behind Anna-Jonesboro (1st) and Carterville (2nd). Brooklyn Welch and Lenora Watt both ran the Open Race and finished with very good times on a hot day. The Lady Foxes are really looking good and hoping to continue improving to make a good run at the Conference and Regional races.

The boys were up next starting at 5:00 p.m.. The boys were coming into the WF Invite looking to test their strength as a team against DuQuoin, Nashville, Herrin and other strong teams and unlike last year, they got their chance this year. The boys started off at a good pace and moved up for the whole race. Theron Smith and Adam Wellen took off with Webber’s Seth Hamerski and stayed with him well past the mile mark. The boys finished fast and strong with Theron Smith taking 7th place overall and 1st on the Foxes with a time of 17:04. Theron was closely followed by Adam Wellen who finished 8th overall, Trace Butler was 10th, Evan Shelton was 20th and Braydon Middendorf was 29th. The Foxes finished 2nd overall with a team score of 74 just 8 points behind the DuQuoin boys team. Between the first and fifth Fox on the team there was only a 1:32 spread. The boys ran exceptionally well especially coming off of the Benton race on Tuesday. Also competing in the Varsity Boys race were Brady Thrane (43rd) and Ian Stover (44th). Ian Stover has really been getting faster and faster over the last few meets.

The Foxes also had 9 boy athletes compete in the Open race. The Foxes boys finished well in the open, taking 1st Aaron Meade and 3rd Shawn Braden. The rest of the Foxes finished in the following order: Will Jones, Owen Shelton, Austin Stanley, Wyatt Brown, Dylan Halley, Ben Irvin, Nathan Kaufman and Seth Davenport. The Foxes have a very deep team and all of the athletes are improving by leaps and bounds. The future of the Foxes Cross Country teams look bright for the next few years!

The Foxes next race will take place on Thursday, September 19th at Norris City for the Dave Gray Invitational.
