In opposition of last weeks meet at Olney, today’s meet at Freeburg was nice. The weather was overcast and it stayed nice the entire day of racing. This was the third year we have went to Freeburg. The Foxes had a lot of athletes missing on the day. The Girls ran first and the team ended up finishing 13th out of 16 schools with full teams with Maddie Karcher winning a medal for her 6th place finish on the day. There were 135 finishers in the girl’s race. The boys had one finisher who medalled, Adam Wellen finished in the 29th place overall there were 164 total runners in the boys race. The Boys ended up in 9th place out of 20 full teams with Adam Wellen as the lead Fox.

In the girl’s race Maddie Karcher was first for the Foxes with a 6th place overall finish and a time of 19:28. Maddie came through in a dead heat with the number five runner. Ashlee Wellen finished in 40th overall, Caroline Lueke was third on the team with a 79th place finish. The rest of the girls finished in the following order: Olivia Ragan (101st), Dacey Webb (108th), Kylee Vaughan (111th), Jordan Tinsley (123rd), and Lenora Watt (133rd). The Lady Foxes have a few wrinkles to iron out but should have it fixed shortly. The Lady Foxes finished with 334 points. There were 25+ teams in the race, but some of them did not have 5 or more runners.

In the Boys race at 9:45, the Foxes were able to run 9 varsity runners instead of the usual 7 runners. The Foxes runners took off quick, which is essential in a large race. Freeburg’s course is mostly a paved path which makes it a quick course. Finishing first for the Foxes was Adam “Money” Wellen with at 29th place finish in a time of 17:06. He was followed shortly behind by Theron Smith 17:17 (35th), Braydon Middendorf 17:51 (53rd), and Trace Butler in 17:56 (56th). Brady Thrane was the Foxes fifth man and finished in a time of 19:30 (110th). The next four Foxes Varsity runners on the day were Will Jones (113th), Aaron Meade (115th), Owen Braden (125th) and Wyatt Brown (139th). The Foxes finished with 283 points. The Foxes ended up in 9th place out of 20, despite not having Evan Shelton who is usually the Foxes 4th runner.

In the Open race, Ian Stover led the Foxes with a 21:19 (36th place finish). There were 82 boys in the race. The other Foxes running in the open had great times, and have constantly improved over the length of the season. Dylan Halley had another great performance of 21:48 (45th place). Ben Irvin finished in 22:55 (53rd). Nathan Kaufman ran a season-best time of 23:37 for 57th place on the day. The Foxes as a whole had a great showing but will have to improve to have any chance in the postseason.

Lots of parents made the one hour and forty-five-minute drive to Freeburg. It’s always great to see parents making the long trip to cheer on their children! I’m glad most of the athletes made the trip even on homecoming day.
