9/4/2018 – Benton “Mr. A” Race

Mr. “A” Race (Benton Park) – 9/4/2018

NARRATIVE – 9/4/2018

The Foxes Cross Country teams competed at the Benton Park today in the Mr. “A” Race in Benton. The Mr. A race was named after a important man in Benton, who has been with the school system for many years. He also is the man who has painted many maps around the area at schools and parks and etc. The weather was around 92 degrees, and it was extremely hot out, luckily the Park is well shaded. The Foxes finished 2nd as a team behind the Benton Rangers and the Lady Foxes finished 2nd as a team behind Althoff Catholic. The Foxes ran 17 boys and 10 girls in the race.

The Benton Course was the same as last year and will be the same course for the sectionals this year. The boys were up first with a 5:00 p.m. start. The boys charged up the first hill with some decent speed but trying not to burn themselves out for the rest of the race. At the mile mark, Hunter Braden, Theron Smith, Kaden Richards and Evan Shelton all came through almost simultaneously. Hunter Braden broke away from the crowd and moved up through Benton’s runners on his way to a Second Place finish. Hunter Braden really competed and worked hard and the effort showed off his talent. Hunter has been a staple of the team for the past two years and looks to be one of the best runners in the south this year again. Kaden Richards ended up in 6th Place with Theron Smith finishing right behind him in 7th place. Evan Shelton took the 10th place, Adam Wellen was 16th and Trace Butler took 19th place. The Foxes had 6 runners place in the top 20, each of which received a T-shirt as the award. The Foxes finished with a team score of 41 points and placed 2nd out of 11 teams. The rest of the Foxes runners finished in the following order: Colin Meade (31st), Keegan Johnson (32nd), Aaron Meade (34th), Brady Thrane (35th), Jack Aydt (43rd), Will Jones (53rd), Ian Stover (65th), Dylan Halley (67th), Ben Irvin (79th) and Seth Davenport (80th). Austin Stanley didn’t quite make it through the race, but was in good spirits after the race and he will get it back under control by the next race. Make sure to check out all the boys stats from the race by clicking the link above. The Foxes showed they have a lot of heart running in the heat and competing the way they did.

The Lady Foxes also ran well at Benton, Freshmen Phenom Maddie Karcher went out with intentions to see how long she could stay with Benton’s Junior Mia McLain. Mia is the daughter of the Legendary Brent McLain from Benton who is also the coach of the Running Rangers. Maddie put in a valiant effort and really pushed herself in the race during the heat of the day. She ended up finishing in Second Place less than one minute behind McLain. Maddie is really performing well and is making advances in every meet. Caroline Lueke put in a lot of effort, looked great and finished in the 13th place. Ashlee Wellen rounded out the Freshmen trio with a 16th place finish. Maddie, Caroline and Ashlee all finished in the top 20 on the day and all received t-shirts for their effort. Just outside of the top 20 were Sophomore Jocelyn Moles (21st) and Raegan Halley (22nd). After the top five finishers, the Foxes finished in the following order: Olivia Ragan (36th), Maddi Jo Maxwell (43rd), Abby Reyling (47th), Ava Davenport (56th) and Jennifer Redmon (58th).  The Lady Foxes team score of 51 put them in 2nd place behind Althoff Catholic.
